The millennial born during 1981-1996
are more likely to talk about depression and anxiety than their parents or
grandparents. This is because this generation has grown up hearing about the
eating disorders, suicide, depression or anxiety and so they have no issue of
talking about mental illness. Seeking a professional’s help or openly talking
about mental illness is not a taboo for millennial. Twenty to thirty year old
are referred as the "the anxious generation." This is because they
were the first to grow up with Internet and online life. Internet has its own set of pros and
cons, on one side its really good source of learning new things and connecting
with people from around the world and on the other hand being active on social
media means facing the societal pressure to keep up with trends and just be on
top and that leads to inferiority complex and stress.
Not only social media is cause of stress and anxiety for millennial but other factors such as academic excellence, family expectations, and peer pressure also becomes sources of depression for the youngsters. If I talk about myself, I too feel constant pressure to maintain my Cumulative GPA and be appreciated for my efforts. In every family there is a topper child who has to maintain that image for the young siblings to follow them, in this case I’m the elder child.
The Millennial frequently compare their accomplishments with everybody else's. This brings out low confidence and instability in them. I being a millennial would also do the same which eventually leads to more stress.
